DHHS won the regional One Act Play competition with “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” a show that played to the students’ musical and comedic strengths.
At the state One Act Play competition in Tifton, their performance drew big laughs and a few tears, earning fifth place in a field of eight, with Xander Mickish and Jax Millarker winning All-Star Cast awards.
The performance was a collaboration between Red Devil Productions, DHHS’ theater troupe, and the DHHS drama class. “We already felt like a really big family, and now we feel that way even more,” said Xander, a member of Red Devil Productions, adding that joining forces with the drama class gave them the chance to “welcome other kids into our family.”
Shamara Williams, sponsor of Red Devil Productions, made the One Act Play competition happen—an activity DHHS appears to have not previously competed in—with a special grant from the Druid Hills Fine Arts Alliance made possible with DHEF funding.
Red Devil Productions will hold auditions for “Mamma Mia” in early 2024. Ms. Williams is looking ahead to next fall. “One Act Play is such a rewarding experience,” she said. “I am working toward competing again next year.”
